Wellness Package In Reserve

Problem: Students need a centralized place to access a range of resources to support their health and wellness, particularly if our community will be remote or partially remote.

Idea: Create a single website/resource that holds all the health and wellness resource options for students. These should be organized from individual-based to broader-based opportunities with a range of synchronous and asynchronous options that... more »

Elective Remote Semester

The shortened in-person semester ideas are out of touch with the reality of the situation, which is that cases in Mecklenburg County are still going up and Charlotte is a hotspot. Students with compromised immune systems or reasons to continue social distancing would be forced into the choice to skip the semester or elect to do remote classes (if that even is a choice offered) at the expense of the quality of their education.... more »

Communication & Community in the Co-curriculum Selected

Problem: Given the potential for a remote or hybrid fall semester, a central challenge is to build community amongst students and communicate opportunities in the co-curricular/extracurricular realm which is an integral part of the holistic educational experience at Davidson College. Student leaders will need resources / pathways for programming in line with public health guidance.

Idea: The Building Community design... more »

Temporary Trimester System for the 2020-2021 Academic Year

As a disclaimer, I'm not a part of the COVID-19 Design Teams and I wanted to put this idea out there to get some conversation going.

We currently have 2 potential plans for the fall, but both of these plans have their own shortcomings. A 13+ calendar is flexible and ensures that our education will be similar to what it was under normal circumstances. The biggest advantages of this system is its possible late start date... more »

Potential Calendar Option

Return in the fall but with an altered schedule. Potentially start the semester a week or two earlier than usual, forgo fall break and attempt to end all classes before thanksgiving break so we simply do not return to campus afterwards. This means all classes would be completed and we could just take exams from home again. This idea is similar to the idea that Notre Dame just announced. Our community is even smaller than... more »

Onboarding Selected

How do we accelerate the onboarding process of new Davidson students as they begin their career at Davidson remotely.

1. Have holistic advisors engage their advisees earlier than usual:

NEED: Assign advisors earlier. Communication with Rebecca and timeline of student engagement.

2. If we are remote, have the RA's reach out to and interact with their halls earlier than normal. Right now they are scheduled to communicate... more »

Establish a virtual "Common" or "Union" In Reserve

Problem: The handoff of the incoming class from Admissions to Registrar/Advising and Curricular Support and early-touch departments in Student Life is an important aspect of the first-year experience. However, the process in the past has generally been a multi-lateral effort that is stretched out through the spring and late into the summer. Under the circumstances, and to prepare for the possible covid-19 contingencies,... more »

A Well-Examined Life Selected trending idea

PROBLEM

Students refer to the Davidson experience as the "stress olympics." They rush from one task, assignment, or course to another, trying to do as much as possible, complete requirements, and get good grades, without reflecting on what they're doing or how and why they're doing it. They often experience a lack of intentionality or disconnect between their coursework at Davidson and their core values and life goals.... more »

Minerva Forum Pilot Project In Reserve

Problem: Davidson's instructors transitioned their courses quickly to remote emergency teaching this spring. While some instructors are satisfied using Zoom and Moodle to deliver course content, feedback from other instructors and students indicates the need for additional options to support active learning pedagogies, increase student engagement, and provide opportunities to build community in an online learning environment.... more »

Digital Learning Institute (DLI) Selected

Problem: Davidson instructors shifted quickly to remote teaching this spring. Student and faculty feedback has been mostly positive around the experience, but with important exceptions reported by individual students and for individual courses. Students and instructors faced challenges associated with differing levels of online teaching experience and insufficient time for design adjustments, resulting in a limited ability... more »

Building Community Through Slow Storytelling Selected

This common learning experience consists of small groups of students, faculty, and staff communicating with each other in an old school way: writing circular letters that go from one person in the group to the next and back to the originator. Each person reads the letter they receive and adds to it and then passes it on to the next person in the group. Each group has 8-10 people in it, with the goal of circulating one... more »

XPL 199: High Impact Experiential Learning Selected

The Problem:

Many high impact experiences were canceled or dramatically changed (possibly reducing impact) for Summer 2020 due to COVID-19. We are seeking to close the gaps and create meaningful opportunities for students to engage in personal, professional, cultural and academically relevant experiences, with an attentive eye on inclusivity and equitable access while students are away from campus.

The Idea:

To help... more »

First-Year Summer Course In Reserve

Problem: How do we develop the intellectual community for first-year students who have not yet experienced being a student on campus? How can we minimize "melt" for incoming first-year students?

Idea: The First Year Experience (FYE) team proposes an optional, free, pass/fail summer course profoundly rooted in the liberal arts available only to incoming first-year students. It would be a way to introduce first-year students... more »

Writing Fellows Embedded in First-year Writing Classes Selected

PROBLEM:

Our proposal addresses several problems simultaneously: (1) the social and intellectual isolation that students may likely feel working remotely alone; (2) the often-rocky transition from high school to college writing practices, exacerbated by the recent curricular disruption in high schools; and (3) the importance of feeling well-placed and supported in Davidson's intellectual community while participating... more »
