COVID-19 Ideas

Not an Idea, but an Inquiry

Two comments/inquiries that must be addressed.

1. How do you ensure students do not engage in mass gatherings, particularly in off-campus locations? It is inherent that students are going to look for ways to party and gather in numbers irresponsible for the current situation we now face. What happens when an eating house, fraternity, student group, or group of students in general, decides to throw an off-campus party... more »

COVID Practicum for Fall 2020

Reopening Davidson College for the fall semester in the midst of COVID-19 will require novel and significant changes to our community in order to maximize safety while allowing personal interactions and classes to occur. These changes will likely involve behavioral changes by students, faculty, and staff as well as monitoring community health in addition to others. The community will need to be educated about best practices... more »

Sentinel Testing

Problem: Asymptomatic transmission of coronavirus means it's hard to know when it's spreading until it's too late to control the spread.

Idea: Test a randomly-selected member of each residence hall once a week (or every two weeks?). If the "sentinel" is positive, test the rest of the hall, and commence contact tracing for anyone who tests positive.

Temporary Trimester System for the 2020-2021 Academic Year

As a disclaimer, I'm not a part of the COVID-19 Design Teams and I wanted to put this idea out there to get some conversation going.

We currently have 2 potential plans for the fall, but both of these plans have their own shortcomings. A 13+ calendar is flexible and ensures that our education will be similar to what it was under normal circumstances. The biggest advantages of this system is its possible late start date... more »

Potential Calendar Option

Return in the fall but with an altered schedule. Potentially start the semester a week or two earlier than usual, forgo fall break and attempt to end all classes before thanksgiving break so we simply do not return to campus afterwards. This means all classes would be completed and we could just take exams from home again. This idea is similar to the idea that Notre Dame just announced. Our community is even smaller than... more »
