Idea Trek

The best ideas can come from anywhere.

Do you have an idea that supports one of Davidson's big shifts,? Big or small, all ideas are welcome!

Over the next 4 years, the college aims to shift from...

  • ...traditional, established paths for student experiences -- to -- adaptable, student-centered experiences & processes
  • ...contained reputation and reach -- to -- global reputation, reach, & impact
  • ...conventional, siloed organization -- to -- adaptable, diverse, cross-functional & inclusive organization
  • ...self-contained -- to -- leverage connections & partnerships with schools & companies
  • ...Financial Aid too dependent on Annual Fund -- to -- socio-economic diversity is fiscally assured

Summer Classes

Offer a small number of academic courses during the summer for Davidson students. Course would target rising sophomores or rising juniors to meet needs that are difficult to meet during the academic year because of demand exceeds supply, or because a 'deeper focus' is useful, or to offer a specialty class/program that Davidson doesn't otherwise offer but wishes it could. Courses would be 5 weeks long (180 hours across... more »

Pathway to Tenure Track

Submitted by Katie Horowitz

Davidson relies heavily on visiting professors to cover required and core courses and to do the work of program building. Sometimes electives developed by visitors are used to demonstrate student interest in a potential or new major in order to justify the need for a tenure line, for which the visitor is subsequently overlooked. Other times long-term visitors are tacitly called upon to do... more »

Online Ordering at Union Cafe

At the Union Cafe, the lines to order cooked food are often very long. In addition, customers must submit their orders by writing them on paper forms. A more efficient approach would be to create an online ordering form. That way, customers could place orders from anywhere on campus and then come to the Cafe when the order is ready. Students have pushed for this change for several years, but with no success.

Create Capacity to Focus on Davidson's Teaching Strengths

A core strength of the Davidson experience is close, in-person interaction among students and faculty. How can we create more opportunities for these types of interactions? One way is to find other ways to provide students with introductory knowledge or skills, thereby freeing faculty time for more in-person interaction in higher-level courses. One such approach is to create larger classes on the introductory level; PSY... more »

Offer non-credit tech/ programming courses

Submitted by Julie Goff

Offer non-credit course(s) or a series of workshops that teach basic computer programming skills. These would be optional for students and available at no additional charge on top of normal course load. Specifically designed to help all Davidson students (regardless of major or field they are looking to pursue) to skill up in basic programming/tech/coding skills (which are increasingly demanded... more »

Policy Studies Initiative

Submitted by Ken Menkhaus

A group of faculty, staff, and alums (including Board members) is hoping to advance an idea we have discussed for several years, namely building on our existing strength in policy studies and engagement with the policy world to develop a more expansive and structured set of curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs related to policy studies. This idea is in early stages and we... more »

Entrepreneurship Minor

Submitted by Rae Clemmons

Davidson is committed to preparing students for lives of leadership and service, and historically has nurtured alumni who now serve as leaders in social enterprises, the medical and law fields, politics, the church, and other important industries. Entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial mindset is another form of leadership skills that students would benefit from, as they prepare for jobs in... more »

DavidsonNext AP Microeconomics Course for High School Students

Submitted by Clark Ross

The DavidsonNext macroeconomics course experienced statistically significant success with one sample of high school students. A high school teacher provided feedback that 3 of his students received a perfect score on the AP macroeconomics and credited Davidson's online course as a major contributing factor. It is extremely rare to see that degree of success in one class sample (30 out of 120,000... more »

Davidson Wild Dogs

Submitted by Lena Parker, '17

Many Davidson students are stressed out and missing their beloved pups from home. By and large Davidson students are not allowed to have dogs on campus and therefore flock to any dog wandering through campus. At the same time, many students at Davidson struggle with anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns and animals have been shown to be effective in addressing these needs!... more »

Student Data Transparency

Submitted by Annie Sadler, '17

Across campus, students are constantly being surveyed and re-surveyed, often around the same issue. Students rarely, if ever, get to see the data that is collected about them. There needs to be a centralized data hub that would allow for increased transparency and collaboration around Davidson's own data. A central database that has every survey done across campus with any publicly accessible... more »

Visualizing Davidson's Academic Interdisciplinary

Submitted by Wendy Raymond

For academic strategic planning, we wish to describe how we will build the faculty of the future - which we are doing right now, for tenure-track faculty we hire today may very well be here in the year 2050 and beyond. We think the faculty of the future can be built by strengthening Davidson's interdisciplinary intersections built on the foundation of strong disciplines. Our interdisciplinarity... more »

Encourage Us to not "Spend Out" Year-End Operating Budget Funds

Submitted by Wendy Raymond

I wish to thank Cindy Hauser for a query long ago that leads to this submission. In collaboration with Ed Kania, I propose we develop incentives for budget managers who are appropriately frugal (that is, they have worked intentionally or have been fortunate to save money on their budget's full portfolio (e.g., energy costs in a particular year were lower because of weather, or a one-time supplies... more »

More Meal Plan Options

Anonymous submission

Right now, there's an issue with accessible food on campus. Freshmen are not permitted to eat at Davis CafĂ© under meal plan because it slows down food service. They are left with commons and the den. However, the den is only open for lunch, and by the time freshman athletes finish practice, commons is closed as well. Davidson should consider bringing a food vendor to campus under meal plan that operates... more »

App for booking study rooms

There are study rooms across campus, and many of them are first-come-first-serve, or they need to be booked through an individual. If there were an app through which you could both book rooms and see which rooms were currently available, it would lower the barriers to booking and make it easier for students to find study rooms and faculty/staff to find meeting places for small groups.
