More Meal Plan Options

Anonymous submission Right now, there's an issue with accessible food on campus. Freshmen are not permitted to eat at Davis Café under meal plan because it slows down food service. They are left with commons and the den. However, the den is only open for lunch, and by the time freshman athletes finish practice, commons is closed as well. Davidson should consider bringing a food vendor to campus under meal plan that operates ...more »

Collaborative Flip

Submitted by Kevin Smith I must start out by crediting Barbara Lom for a discussion that led to this idea. This idea comes from the convergence of several features and challenges of teaching at Davidson: First, owing to our small class sizes, many of us teach the same courses. Second, many faculty are interested in maximizing high-quality, active learning in the classroom, but this often relies on high-quality preparation ...more »

Submitted by Melissa Gonzalez Groups of up to 4 faculty can propose to take a cohort of 30 students to a location within the United States for a semester. The overarching goal is to study a site from multiple disciplinary perspectives, with a focus on understanding how justice, equality, and community function there. Students will develop knowledge about the site that they can both turn inwards and outwards, articulating ...more »

Encourage Us to not "Spend Out" Year-End Operating Budget Funds

Submitted by Wendy Raymond I wish to thank Cindy Hauser for a query long ago that leads to this submission. In collaboration with Ed Kania, I propose we develop incentives for budget managers who are appropriately frugal (that is, they have worked intentionally or have been fortunate to save money on their budget's full portfolio (e.g., energy costs in a particular year were lower because of weather, or a one-time supplies ...more »

Visualizing Davidson's Academic Interdisciplinary

Submitted by Wendy Raymond For academic strategic planning, we wish to describe how we will build the faculty of the future - which we are doing right now, for tenure-track faculty we hire today may very well be here in the year 2050 and beyond. We think the faculty of the future can be built by strengthening Davidson's interdisciplinary intersections built on the foundation of strong disciplines. Our interdisciplinarity ...more »

Data Lab

Submitted by Wendy Raymond We are living in the age of data: big data, data mining, data analytics; data interpretation, data collection, data privacy – questions about data reach into nearly every aspect of our lives. Data Lab is an initiative aimed at ensuring that Davidson students and faculty are prepared to participate fully, compete successfully, and contribute productively to this new era by bringing new learning ...more »

Student Data Transparency

Submitted by Annie Sadler, '17 Across campus, students are constantly being surveyed and re-surveyed, often around the same issue. Students rarely, if ever, get to see the data that is collected about them. There needs to be a centralized data hub that would allow for increased transparency and collaboration around Davidson's own data. A central database that has every survey done across campus with any publicly accessible ...more »

Davidson Wild Dogs

Submitted by Lena Parker, '17 Many Davidson students are stressed out and missing their beloved pups from home. By and large Davidson students are not allowed to have dogs on campus and therefore flock to any dog wandering through campus. At the same time, many students at Davidson struggle with anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns and animals have been shown to be effective in addressing these needs! ...more »

DavidsonNext AP Microeconomics Course for High School Students

Submitted by Clark Ross The DavidsonNext macroeconomics course experienced statistically significant success with one sample of high school students. A high school teacher provided feedback that 3 of his students received a perfect score on the AP macroeconomics and credited Davidson's online course as a major contributing factor. It is extremely rare to see that degree of success in one class sample (30 out of 120,000 ...more »

Online Ordering at Union Cafe

At the Union Cafe, the lines to order cooked food are often very long. In addition, customers must submit their orders by writing them on paper forms. A more efficient approach would be to create an online ordering form. That way, customers could place orders from anywhere on campus and then come to the Cafe when the order is ready. Students have pushed for this change for several years, but with no success.

Promoting Liberal Arts Beyond Campus

Submitted by Pat Sellers The core idea is for Davidson faculty to teach small liberal arts courses online to strong high school students across the country. MIT and other universities are already trying this approach for graduate courses and programs, but no one is trying it for undergraduate/high school students. Such Davidson-taught courses could further the institution in several ways: . The courses would create ...more »

Submitted by Rex Salisbury Acknowledging that immersive language learning is a more effective means of mastery than non-immersion across all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, CS and DS faculty would like to test immersive technology learning as a strategy that gives underrepresented students a leg up in preparation for success in technology disciplines, like computer science. Faculty in CS and DS propose a semester-long, ...more »

Pathway to Tenure Track

Submitted by Katie Horowitz Davidson relies heavily on visiting professors to cover required and core courses and to do the work of program building. Sometimes electives developed by visitors are used to demonstrate student interest in a potential or new major in order to justify the need for a tenure line, for which the visitor is subsequently overlooked. Other times long-term visitors are tacitly called upon to do ...more »
