Incentivize Smart Energy Practices in Dorms

The way students set their thermometers, run their dishes, and take their showers greatly impacts campus's energy consumption. Individual practice is often needlessly wasteful because students don't know the impact of their personal choices. For instance, if students just kept their thermometer closer to the outside temperature Davidson would save money on its energy bill and have a smaller carbon footprint. If Physical Plant or RLO is able to track energy consumption from individual dorms, I think each dorm should receive a monthly email telling them how much energy they used. That email coudl come with some simple tips for saving energy. Separately, but additionally, energy saving could be incentivized in a few different ways. The school could refund a portion of the money saved on energy by each dorm/apt. to Davidson students. Or, it could have a contest with prizes like athletics does for attending sports events.

Does your idea have funding? (this will not influence decisions to support/not support the idea) No

What might prevent this idea from working?

Students use a lot more energy in their dorms and apartments than they realize, costing the school money.

How might this idea solve it?

First, it would show them monthly how much energy they've used. Much like the iphone function which tells you your weekly screen time, just knowledge of your energy consumption would encourage students to change their energy consumption behavior. An added incentive would further encourage smart saving practices.

Who would benefit from this idea? Who are your stakeholders?

The environment: Energy would be saved

The college's expenses: The school would have to spend less on utilities.

Students: They get added knowledge of their impact on the environment & possibly incentives.

How does this idea achieve your goals for a great senior experience?

Is Physical Plant able to track metrics of energy consumption for individual dorms?

Can they & are they willing to send monthly automated updates to students?

Refunds or incentives may be difficult to put together.
